Description Shirley forces, as part of the TKC Joint Venture, played numerous key roles in the construction of the foundations for the future bridge. Shirley pile driving crews supervised and placed the main land piles consisting of 72” and smaller diameter steel tubes up to and over 175 feet in length. These large piles provided the support for massive footings to support the ultimate precast substructure system. In conjunction with this operation, Shirley Crews provided piles driving and shoring support for land excavation, as well as constructing cofferdams in the Potomac River for the marine foundations. Utilizing both vibratory and hydraulic pile hammers ( capability of up to and over 365,000 ft. lbs. energy) and handled by both track and a Ringer Based Crane due to the massive weights and sizes of individual members the project was one of the significant “heavy” projects for the region.
