| Description |
Fast of the heels of
the success of Phase 2/3 Springfield, came this
second and largest of all the Springfield projects
to be bid. The Phase 4 project began construction
in the heart of the beltway interchange and provided
the longest and highest bridge structure at the
center of the interchange. This B 610 structure
will span nearly a mile in length and approach
130 feet in the air to carry traffic onto southbound
I 95 and past all the local congestion. This $125
Million dollar effort (nearing completion in late
2004) provided the major flyovers and three other
structures including the multi-phase bridge carrying
beltway traffic over the WMATA and CSX Railroad
tracks just east of the interchange. Working in
phases to maintain beltway traffic and working
with WMATA & CSX personnel to minimize rail service
requires significant effort and coordination.
Not to be challenged only with bridge work, the
project also required significant relocation of
major utilities to allow the interchange construction.
Utilizing for the first time on a highway project,
Shirley employed Micro-Tunnelling methods to relocate
thousands of feet of sanitary sewer (gravity)
to provide uninterrupted service for the regional
system. This major coordination effort involved
VDOT, FHWA, WMATA, CSX, and other local agencies
along with the forces of Shirley Contracting and
balancing the needs of the Springfield community,
a monumental effort at the least. |
