Winning the 1996 Associated
Builders and Contractors (ABC) award for Excellence
in Construction this bridge is the entrance feature
for the headquarters of the Sallie Mae Corporation
located in Reston, Virginia. The bridge is a cast
in place structure composed of arched cast in
place beams and abutments bearing on H-Pile foundations.
The cast concrete deck was then overlaid with
asphalt to preserve the look of the roadway through
the project. Construction was made difficult by
the presence of the Virginia Power transmission
mains directly overhead and the fact that the
bridge spanned over the busy W&OD Trail. Shirley's
forces experience in coordinating cranes and construction
operation around heavy power distribution systems
was integral in making this project successful.
