In order for the Developer
of the massive Potomac Yards Complex in Alexandria,
Virginia to move forward the City of Alexandria
required a 30" diameter truck sewer to be constructed
through the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Lacking
the sewer capacity for trunk lines and a desperate
need to upgrade an aging system the Potomac Yard
developer committed to constructing the trunk
line. Constructing a 30" sewer often as deep as
45 feet below the surface through the heart of
historic Old Town Alexandria and in the center
of the roadways presented numerous obstacles and
challenges. Shirley Contracting Company, LLC was
selected to build the project and by the end the
project was selected as the 2003 New Project of
the Year Award winner from Trenchless Society
of North America and was prominently feature in
the October 2003 issue of Trenchless Technology
Magazine.
