| Description |
Known as the "Chinatown
Friendship Archway", this unique project was undertaken
by Shirley's Structural group in 1987. Constructing
the foundations, structural steel frame, precast
panels, electrical work, and setting the actual
arch Shirley crews worked in concert with the
Chinese crews from mainland China. The actual
arch was constructed by the people of Beijing,
China and represents many hours of arduous handwork
by skilled craftsman using little in the way of
power tools. The most difficult aspect of the
project was trying to coordinate the work in light
of the various language and cultural barriers.
Interpreters were employed to assist in this task
and proved quite capable. The Chinatown Arch is
certainly a landmark in Washington D.C. and one
that demonstrates the versatility found at Shirley
Contracting Company. The Chinatown Arch can be
found at 7th & H Streets in Northwest Washington
