Highway & Bridge
Highway and bridge construction encompasses the roadways
and bridges we travel on in every day life, from the
simple rural roadway to the complicated urban interchange;
from the simple span over a small creek to the monumental
bridge over a major thoroughfare or waterway. These
traveled roads get us to and from our places of work,
where we live, access to recreation and community, in
short provide the means to go about our destinations
in our every day life. Shirley Contracting Company,
LLC is known for roads and bridges, from a simple turn
lane on Fairfax County Parkway to the complex Springfield
Interchanges; and from a small widening of a bridge
on Route 1 in Maryland to the massive flyovers of the
Springfield Interchange and Route 28 Corridor Improvements
project. Whatever the road or bridge, whatever the size
or scope, our forces are ready to mobilize to complete
the task.
Heavy Construction
Heavy Construction is often described as "the industry
and art of building the structures that civilization
relies on and by which civilization can be judged".
Shirley Contracting Company sees heavy construction
as comprising all of the facets of what we do and most
specifically those of technically challenging features,
massive, deep underground, large or deep piles, or those
situations requiring significant support to existing
structures and roadways, construction feats that will
last for other civilizations to see and discover. Our
heavy construction efforts include deep foundations
and ground improvement, such as that found in the Route
1 Ground Improvements project, massive foundations and
deep excavations such as in many of the bridge foundations
we construct, pile driving for the Woodrow Wilson bridge
or for the retaining wall down the street, the large
retaining structures and walls allowing us to construct
massive roadways adjacent to our homes, significant
drainage channels, like Four Mile Run, to protect our
communities, and massive soundwalls constructed to make
our home life a little more comfortable.
Utility Infrastructure
Shirley Contracting constructs all of the infrastructure
for the utilities that serve our daily lives and properties.
We create pipe networks that provide water and sewer
service, tunnels that provide drainage and pathways
for utility services, ductbanks providing power and
communication conduits and pathways, and deep outfall
pipes and tunnels draining our cities and moving sanitary
waste to treatment facilities. In addition, Shirley
specializes in constructing fuel tanks and fuel farms
providing the fuels and energy for transportation and
constructing the above ground water tanks and towers
that provide water for our daily use--all of these features
and more our people build to improve the quality of
life. Our work envelopes a complexity that can be seen
on such projects as the Potomac Yard micro-tunnel trunk
sewer, the 1.5 million gallon water storage tank at
Fort Belvoir, the ductbanks constructed in the Route
1 Corridor, the water main systems diverted and reconstructed
in the Springfield Interchange, and in the simple water
and sewer systems we construct in the site developments
and communities we help build.
Concrete & Structures
Retaining walls to box culverts, noise abatement walls
to foundations, the Chinatown Friendship Archway to
the blast walls that protect the Pentagon, Shirley Contracting
Company has the capability and experience to construct
them all. Our expertise allows us the ability to construct
any type of structure from concrete to structural steel,
from pile foundations to above ground walls. In addition,
this vast experience provides us the capability to not
only design it, build it, but most importantly understand
how to integrate the project with the community. We
create structures that provide drainage or pathways
for streams and rivers to those that provide safe passage
for pedestrians on the W&OD trail above or below the
roadways it crosses. Our structures provide and protect
our means of travel, our communities and provide the
pathways for public agencies to deliver critical utilities
to the point of usage.
Design-Build, Private/Public
Partnerships
Shirley Contracting is at the forefront of providing
the innovative delivery of projects to local, state
and federal government, as well as the private owner
or development company. Design-Build is growing as a
means to provide faster delivery of projects versus
the traditional design-bid-build methods. The growing
demands of our region dictate an ever faster need for
construction of transportation and utility solutions
for our communities. Combine the needed speed of delivery
with the shortfall of funds, or inability of public
entities to deliver funds timely, and you find that
with innovative financing techniques and our financial
strength Shirley can often provide the needed financial
tools, development and design capability and our construction
expertise to provide complete turn-key delivery of many
types of projects. Visit our www.28freeway.com website
to see our PPTA (Public Private Transportation Act)
project for the State of Virginia where we are providing
the financing, development, design, and construction
of over $200 million in transportation improvements
significantly faster that the traditional methods or
government funding will allow. Drive by the Pentagon
on Route 110 and see the massive protective wall that
our forces designed and constructed and recently won
an ABC "Excellence in Construction Award". Whatever
the project or situation consider meeting with us to
consider the innovative ways in which we can deliver
your next project.
Site Development
The local Washington region and the Mid-Atlantic region
are always growing and expanding. The need for communities
and facilities providing places to live and work are
being constructed everywhere you look. The people, equipment,
and resources available in our company provide the ability
to tackle site developments large and small. In fact,
a division of our company, Metro
Earthworks, specializes in this area. For over 30
years, Shirley has provided this expertise and in our
last 5 years recognized the need for a group to concentrate
in this endeavor. Shirley's clients range from government
entities such as: the Virginia Department of Transportation
to large builders such as Pulte and Crescent Resources,
as well as the small builder of a single building or
cluster of homes. Quite often our innovative delivery
methods such as financing or Design-Build are employed
here to enhance the level of service we can provide
and improve the economic viability and scheduled delivery
of the project for the owner. Whether the site is 5
acres or 500 acres, one small building or a complete
campus, 100 feet of roads and utility services or miles
of infrastructure, our teams and our expertise are available
to exceed your requirements.
