Shirley Contracting Corporation
Wins Award
Winter 1997 - Shirley Interchange Newsletter
On September 11, 1996 Associated Builders and
Contractors of Virginia & DC Metro awarded Shirley
Contracting Corporation the Excellence in Construction
Award, for the Sallie Mae Bridge.
The Bridge consists of cast in place arch beams
with the abutments bearing on H pile foundations.
The deck is 81/2" thick with an asphalt overlay.
Construction of this project required coordination
with Virginia Power, in order to operate cranes
and work under the 250 KV power lines.
The Project Manager, John Majane III P.E., designed
an extensive falsework system which provided both
the support for the superstructure and a working
platform for our personnel. Work began in December
1995 and was completed in May of 1996. Shirley
Contracting Corporation worked as a subcontractor
under OMNI Construction. The owner is Sallie Mae
Corporation, while Dewberry & Davis was the Structural
Engineer for this project.
The deck consists of two sections with an oval
cutout in the middle allowing light to reach the
bike trail below the bridge.
Potomac Rebar installed reinforcing steel, which
was supplied by the New Jersey Steel Corporation.
The bearing piles were supplied by Skyline Steel
Corporation. The concrete was supplied by Virginia
Concrete Corporation.
Once the basic structure was completed, a precast
cladding was hung on the fascia and parapets.
The abutment walls have a stone lining.
Shirley Contracting Corporation's stall for the
project included: John Majane, Steve Sewell, Dave
Sewell, and Keith Cook. A special thank you goes
to all who worked on the project, for their hard
work and dedication to make this award possible.
